Course Description

This comprehensive lecture and workshop series, led by a clinician with 25 years of exclusive experience in treating complex TMD/craniocervical mandibular dysfunction (CCMD), equips dentists with the knowledge and hands-on skills to confidently recognize, diagnose, and manage TMD in daily practice. Participants will learn to identify both symptomatic and at-risk asymptomatic patients, implement preventative strategies, and avoid common treatment pitfalls. The hands-on workshop provides practical training in evaluating and recording treatment positions, enabling attendees to begin applying physiologic neuromuscular occlusion principles immediately in restorative and prosthetic cases.

From a clinician who has exclusively devoted his practice to treating complex TMD/craniocervical mandibular dysfunction (CCMD) patients for 25 years, you will learn to understand signs and symptoms of TMD; recognize asymptomatic patients who could become symptomatic after routine restorative or orthodontic treatment; implement strategies in daily dental practices to lessen occurrence or triggering of TMD symptoms; and avoid practices that exacerbate TMD.

Learning Objectives:

1. RECOGNIZE clinical signs of TMD/CCMD during routine dental encounters
2. UNDERSTAND how varied presenting symptoms could be caused by TMD/CCMD
3. DISPEL the many TMJ myths you may have learned as facts
4. AVOID common dental treatment practices during routine general dentistry that could precipitate TMD symptoms

This workshop covers the practical application of principles learned in the “TMJ – How does it apply to every day dentistry?” lecture for treating most TMD cases at a basic level. Includes hands-on demonstrations on volunteers; attending doctors get first hand experience in evaluating and diagnosing TMD cases, including recording the diagnosed treatment position – “taking a bite”.

This micro-residency in Physiologic Neuro Muscular Occlusion prepares dentists to apply this knowledge, ‘Monday morning’ in their practices. Symptomatic or asymptomatic TMD patients needing quadrant restorative care, implant supported restorations, and partial/complete dentures could be treated more confidently!

Learning Objectives:

5. PERFORM a TMD clinical examination competently
6. DIAGNOSE and manage most TMD patients effectively
7. RECORD physiologic bite relation for stability in restorative and TMD cases
